Clopay® History Milestones

First 120 Years

1859 History begins with Benard Seinsheimer Corporation, a paper wholesaler in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1930s Manufactured blackout window shades during the War and changed name to Clopay, an acronym for "cloth and paper."

1964 Clopay entered the garage door business with purchase of Baker-Aldor-Jones of Hialeah, FL.

1969 Clopay acquired Francis Products of Russia, Ohio. Russia factory became the primary manufacturing location.

1977 Wood doors were made in Ludlow, VT and Ada, OK.

1970s Clopay organized into Plastic Products, Window Fashions and Garage Door businesses.

1980s

1980 First steel doors produced. Clopay led the market conversion from wood to steel garage doors.

1983 Pioneered Tog-L-Loc® technology to assemble steel doors and one of the first to use pre-painted steel.

1986 Instrument Systems of New York acquired Clopay Corporation.

1986 Clopay Dealer Advisory Board formed and first meeting is held. Board is still active today.

1988-1989 Established Authorized Dealer Network and first Authorized Dealer Conference held at the Doral on Miami Beach and Paradise Island, Bahamas. Authorized Dealer Conference name was later changed to Clopay Leadership Conference and is still being held today.

Late 80s All manufacturing consolidated into Russia, OH. Established Distribution Center network for improved regional customer service.

1990s

Early 90s Clopay first to focus on garage door appearance. Created “We Look Right At Home®” tag line and began investing in Clopay brand awareness. Introduced insulated sandwich constructed doors for the residential and commercial markets.

1992 Acquired Ideal Door® and Phoenix Door, two Wisconsin-based door companies.

Mid 90s Introduced new Leaded-Look windows, a first in the garage door industry. Introduced EZ-SET® Spring System for easier and safer spring installation and SAFE-T-BRACKET® for enhanced door safety.

1995 Clopay's parent company, Instrument Systems Corporation, changed name to Griffon Corporation. Clopay recognized as the fastest growing garage door brand.

1995 Clopay acquired Atlas Roll-lite, a rolling and sectional steel door manufacturer.

1996 Clopay awarded the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, the first and only in the garage door industry.

1997 Clopay acquired Holmes-Hally Industries, including Arizona Door Systems of Tempe, AZ, and Holmes Door of Auburn, WA and Holmes-Hally Hardware. Clopay now the largest manufacturer of residential garage doors in North America.

1998 Established Master Authorized Dealer network. Developed WindCode® product line and program for high wind door applications.

2000s

2000 Introduced the Reserve® Collection of beautiful, hand-crafted, wood carriage house doors.

2002 Moved corporate headquarters from downtown Cincinnati to Mason, OH. New facility combined corporate headquarters and a technical development center.

2003 Launched Coachman® Collection of classic carriage house doors that are virtually maintenance-free.

2004 Introduced the Brilliance® Series windows. Beautiful cut glass appearance at affordable prices.

2005 Launched Gallery® and Grand Harbor® Collections of stylish and affordable carriage house designs.

2005 Introduced the Avante™ Collection, sleek designs for contemporary-style homes.

2006-07 Purchased 900,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Troy, OH and moved Tempe, AZ manufacturing to Troy plant.

2008 Launched polyurethane foam-injected residential and commercial doors, Ultra-Grain® paint finish and a line of complementary fiberglass and steel entry doors.

2010s

2011 Completed consolidation of primary door manufacturing into Troy, OH location. Introduced Canyon Ridge® Collection, a composite wood look without the maintenance.

2012 Completed expansion of polyurethane foam-injected door capacity and Ultra-Grain® finish on raised panel doors. Introduced colored overlays on Coachman® Collection and Canyon Ridge® Collection Ultra-Grain® Series, an attractive and economical alternative to the Limited Edition Series.

2013 Clopay unveiled Intellicore®, the new brand name for its proprietary polyurethane insulation and Cypress™ Collection of insulated, flush panel garage doors with Ultra-Grain® paint finish. MyDoor®, a unique web-based selling tool is introduced to Clopay Master and Authorized Dealers. Launched new "imagine™" advertising campaign; recognized as the best ad campaign by Door + Access Systems magazine and awarded three Brand Builder Awards from residential design and construction industry publisher Hanley Wood.

2014 Color Blast™ custom Sherwin-Williams® paint color program introduced for Commercial and Residential steel doors.

2015 Began the expansion of our Troy facility to better service our customers and add new products. Completed in 2016. Received a patent on WindCode reinforcement strutting, T-Strut.

2016 Introduced the Modern Steel Collection. Launched the Clopay imagineNATION before and after makeover contest.  Celebrated our 20th anniversary as a Good Housekeeping Seal holder.

2017 Introduced a Commercial Door Quoting tool (CDQ) to make it easy and efficient to quote commercial doors.

2018 Acquired CornellCookson, the largest commercial and industrial coiling door manufacturer.

2019 Clopay Corporation became the largest manufacturer of overhead doors in North America.
