Creating the Ultimate Garage Flex Space

Jul 14, 2023

The 2022 New American Home successfully combines different door styles on the same house to maximize style and unique functionality in the garage.

Orlando, Fla. builder Envy Homes used two Clopay door models on the contemporary coastal home -- faux wood doors with clean horizontal lines that give off a distinct mid-century modern vibe, and a sleek glass garage door that opens up the back of the house to an outdoor patio and pool area.

Opaque glass lets natural light into the garage without compromising privacy.

Situated on a narrow corner lot, the house was intentionally designed to maximize indoor-outdoor connections. All of the primary rooms open to the central courtyard, providing easy access for entertaining.

The design team also integrated flex spaces throughout the home that can be used as additional square footage living areas for a variety of activities. One of them is the garage.

The garage forms one wall of the home’s courtyard. Instead of putting in a standard entry door, the builder used an 18’ x 8’ Avante aluminum and glass overhead sectional door to open up the back wall. This not only creates a way to enter and exit the pool area without having to walk through the house; the door also serves as a dramatic architectural feature, especially at night.

White powder-coated hardware gives the door a more finished appearance.

The painted white frame with opaque glass blends seamlessly with the home’s other windows and doors. And since it’s made of commercial grade, rust- and corrosion-resistant aluminum, it’s designed to be resilient in humid coastal climates.

Even though the garage is positioned on the back of the house, it’s highly visible and the design team wanted the rear elevation to make a statement when you drive up. They selected Canyon Ridge Modern faux wood doors for the three-stall parking area. The solid door design complements other wood accents on the home’s exterior. Metal inlays interspersed between horizontal composite planks make for a stunning design signaling that this entrance is equally as grand as the traditional front door.

The composite boards are molded from hand-selected pieces of Mahogany to reproduce the natural grain pattern and texture. Even though it looks and feels like real wood, the material is moisture-resistant and won’t rot, crack or warp.

“We partnered with Clopay to achieve a few different design goals,” said Serena Hahn, CEO of Envy Homes. “We wanted the garage to feel like a seamless living space by providing additional square footage to the courtyard area. The glass garage door does that beautifully. The Canyon Ridge Modern doors that look like stained wood definitely catch your eye. Both models are designed to withstand the Florida climate without sacrificing beauty or performance.”

Composite and aluminum are not only weatherproof, but they both look fantastic and come in many colors like neutrals and wood grain-inspired finishes. They can also be painted bright, fun shades with our Color Blast custom paint option.
