Midwest Living’s former home editor Carol Schalla shares the secrets behind her budget-savvy 1,800 sq. ft. Door County, Wisconsin dream cottage in the July/August issue.
Carol and architect-builder Scott Humber designed the house as an uncomplicated box with a two-car garage and screen porch.

Board-and-batten siding, barn-style shutters and a cupola with a cow weathervane underscore the home’s barn-look. Clopay Coachman Collection carriage house garage doors are the finishing touch. The doors look like wood but are constructed of durable, low- maintenance steel with composite overlays.

Schalla was thinking outside the box when she infused natural elements into a clean, contemporary style for the 2010 exhibit.
Clopay Avante Collection, bronze anodized frame with clear insulated glass panels.
One idea we loved was her take on versatile outdoor living. A patio and trellis extended from the kitchen to connect the detached garage to the house. Instead of using a siding or a small entry door on the back side of the garage, she used Clopay’s modern
Avante Collection glass door to enlarge the patio entertaining area. Avante Collection glass door to enlarge the patio entertaining area.
Glass garage doors like the Avante are a popular choice to seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor living spaces. At the press of a button, the doors are automatically raised, allowing traffic to flow during gatherings. Closed, they create an attractive wall of windows, adding a panoramic view to any living space.
For privacy and security, Schalla specified an Avante Collection door with a frosted glass panels for the front of the garage.
Egg Harbor Idea Home
Designed as a luxurious, yet comfortable vacation home, the Egg Harbor Idea Home is perched on a bluff, with magnificent views overlooking the waters of Green Bay Wisconsin.
With its Shingle-style details, a cross-gabled roof and long front porch, the home’s design reflects both a “Cape Cod” spirit and a Scandinavian influence from the area’s early settlers.
